This is the hard way! Headwinds made Markham's mission harder than the eastbound route taken by Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Here she learned to hunt with the Masai, was attacked by a Lion and survived, became the first woman to become a licensed race horse trainer, was a pioneer of bush flying, as well as the first person (male or female) to fly across the Atlantic solo East to West from England. Growing up in the early 1900s, she left England aged four for Africa with her family before her mother and brother returned leaving her and her father there. As modern women grow in confidence and advertisers discover that this girl can, it seems to me that Beryl could and did whatever she put her mind to. But put the work in upfront, have contingencies and work hard, and more often than not you get what you hoped for. Hope of the right weather, the right light, the right performance. Relevant, as most productions have an element of hope attached to them, especially aerial work. One of many doses of wisdom that can be found in Beryl Markham’s book West with the Night , the inspiration behind our latest aerial cinematography reel.
